Student ART Adventure is a new program offered by Timberline to elementary and middle-school age children.

Timberline artists conduct a guided tour of the gallery, using the displayed art to introduce the students to art concepts, to give the them an art vocabulary and to encourage the students to question and interact with the art teachers.

Here are examples of the ideas covered:

What is the difference between an art museum and an art gallery? What is two dimensional art? What is three dimensional art? What is an art theme? How do different artists interpret a theme? Students are shown examples of the many ways Half Dome has been depicted, how trees can have many different images. Attention is drawn to stylistic differences, such as realistic or impressionistic.

The color wheel is used to show warm and cool colors, analogous colors, compliments, split compliments; paintings are used to show the importance of color and how it can portray perspective, shadows, night or day.

Various media are explained and examples of oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, pen, ink, collages, mixed media are shown to demonstrate how they are used in two and three dimensional works. Sculpture in clay, wood, metal, jewelry, gourds, and textiles is discussed.

Hands-on experiences can be provided. Group size is limited to 10 school age students accompanied by at least one school teacher and one chaperone. Tours must be scheduled two weeks in advance. Hands-on projects require three weeks advance scheduling. To plan a Student ART Adventure, contact Timberline 559-683-3345 or Merylyn Whited, President at 559-683-0762.
